INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
It is the general saying that “what a man can do, woman can do better”. The role and importance of women in not only in the society but also in the organizations remains issues of serious concern and debate. In every society, especially in Africa, attitudes, perception and feelings regarding the role of women in the society are a major factor in deciding their status.
Traditionally, in African societies, women are not only perceived as inferior to men but they are also marginalized and denied equal opportunities as they were treated as a lower gender in every aspects including job opportunity and employment. According to Obioha and Chima (2015), the general belief is that the role of women starts and ends with running the home affairs and nothing more.
Also, Sanusi and Adelabu (2015) emphasize that women were believed to be the weaker sex created to be nurtured as helpers that were meant to stay back at home while men go to work. Ani (2014) states that women constitute the group at the bottom of the ladder in respect to employment, training and status in the society.
Meanwhile, journalism is a profession saddled with the responsibility of finding facts, writing news, editing news and other editorial materials that are worthy of public interest for presentation. According to Odejayi (2015) says journalists through the media bring the world closest by reporting vents on politics, sport, disasters even in faraway China, UK, US, Russia e.t.c within some seconds.
According to Akinfeleye (2016), journalism as the nose, eye, mouth, ear of the public who help the public to see what is happening, to find-out where it is happening, to help public to ask question on what they want to know from the people involved and to feed them as quickly as possible. However, Amao (2017) says journalism is the collection, preparation and distribution of news and related commentary and feature materials through such media as pamphlets, newsletter, magazines, radio, motion pictures, television, the internet and books.
Meanwhile, radio or television presenters are the anchors of major programmes to presents, educate, entertain and inform the general public through various programmes on national, regional, satellite and cable channels. They act as the public face (or voice) on various types of programmes, including news progarmmes, sports, current affairs and entertainment shows. They are also the centre point for programmes presentation, responsible for keeping the radio or television stations flowing at the appropriate pace and time by introducing and interviewing guests and providing links between one segment to another that hold the station’s programme together. Edward (2019).
Presenters work on all kinds of live and recorded programmes, including; news and current affairs, sport, music shows, chat shows, children's programmes, women programme, entertainment, game shows, and specialized programmes such as travel, gardening, history, health e.t.c.
In the struggle and agitation to ensure equal women participation in the media, women journalists have also launched associations or identity organizations that differentiate them from other organizations, such as the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and Women in the Media (WIM) in conjunction with National Council of Women Society (NCWS) to address the organizational gender issues surrounding women journalists.
Based on the foregoing, this study seeks to examine the impact and contribution of female presenters in the Nigerian broadcasting media using Gbemi Olateru Olagbegi as the cases study in this research work.
Therefore, Gbemi Olateru Olagbegi is one of the on-air personalities of Beat 99.9 F.M, Nigerian broadcaster and a presenter known for regular presentation of programmes at The Beat 99.9 FM. Gbemi Olateru has won on-air personality of the year award at the 2008 Future Awards and as part of Nigerian group. She is a celebrity model for Soul Mate hair products. She is currently program director for Naija FM 102.7 FM, an indigenous radio station in Lagos.
